Local friends of the recently departed Steve Sloan will be able to celebrate his life in a memorial service, to be held Thursday afternoon.
Considered the greatest athlete to come out of Bradley County, Sloan was a four-sport star for Bradley Central, leading them to state championships in both basketball and football in the 1961-62 school year.
An all-state performer in both basketball and football, he also was a standout golfer, placing in the Top 5 twice in TSSAA State Championships.
Going to play for legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant he led Alabama to back-to-back national championships.
After a two-year stint playing for the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL, Sloan began a highly-successful collegiate coaching and athletic director career.
Passing on Sunday, April 14, a Celebration of Life service was held in Orlando, Florida, where he had lived since retiring from the University of Central Florida in 2005.
The service was conducted by the Rev. Jim Gibson, with tributes from Tommy Limbaugh, David Lee, and NFL veteran coach Romeo Crennel.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday May 2, 2024, at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Cleveland, led by the Rev. Jim Gibson.
A Memorial Gathering will be held following the graveside service until 5:00 p.m. in the main lobby of the New Preschool Wing at the First Baptist Church of Cleveland, located at 1275 Stuart Road.
