Cheryl-Ann Kehaulani (Bactad) Lemalu
Cheryl-Ann Kehaulani (Bactad) Lemalu, 61, of Lihue, passed away on March 2, 2025, at Straub Hospital. She was born on Dec. 31, 1963, in Honolulu. She was employed in the construction industry.
She was preceded in death by her parents Allan Bactad Sr. and Octavia (Holt) Nakamura, stepfather Mitchell Nakamura Sr., stepmother Anette Bactad and brother Brandon Kaleiohi.
She is survived by her partner Walter “Ronnie” Holt of Lihue, sons Kaimana Lemi of California, Mathew (Seanne) Lemalu Jr. of Anahola, Kalani (Cari) Lemalu of Colorado, daughters Kealoha “Ala” (Tanzy) Bactad of Kapaa, Jolene Corr of Hanamaulu, Naomi Fale of Oahu, Amaya Simao of Kalaheo, brothers Allan (Nani) Bactad Jr. of Waimea, Joe (Corrina) Bactad of Hanapepe, Everette “Tom” (Debbie) Benuzi of Nevada, Mitchell Nakamura Jr. of Hanapepe, Mark Sherman of Nevada, sisters Charmaine Bactad of Waimea, Helen (Ralph) Tokuda of Lihue, Raynette (Martin) Reynoso of Nevada, Eunice (Rick) Estacio Jr. of Hanamaulu, Dene Akana of Georgia, Patricia Arizo of Waimea, Lavern Nakamura of Texas, grandchildren Waika Rogers, Kawelo Rogers, Kawaiala Morita-Corr, Kiersten Corr, Kourtney Corr-Ludington, Kaleb Lemalu, Legacy Fale, numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Lydgate Pavilion starting at 11 a.m. The family requests casual attire.
Alfred P. Viado
Alfred P. Viado, fondly known as “Al,” of Beaverton, Oregon, age 76, passed away peacefully on Dec. 12, 2024, at Portland VA Medical Center with his wife, Pam Viado by his side. Born in Lihue, Hawaii on March 23, 1948, he was son of Grace Baptista Viado and Jesus Viado. Al was a renowned lighting design engineer, a devoted friend and loving husband, father to 4, grandfather to 10 and great- grandfather to 2.
Born and raised in Kauai, Hawaii, he was the 4th of 5 children. Al proudly served in the Navy from 1967 to 1971. After his time in the military, he made Portland, Oregon his home, where he built his family, established his career and became an integral part of the community. He was injured in a motorcycle accident on Aug. 30, 2005, and successfully maneuvered through life as a quadriplegic for 19 years.
Al was a true European sports car enthusiast, with a special appreciation for sleek design, performance, engineering, and craftsmanship. After saving for many years, he bought his prized possession, a black 1988 Porsche 911 Carerra Cabriolet Wide Body. Al found great joy driving and taking immaculate care of this car.
Al was competitive in sports, both as an athlete and as a spectator. He loved to play basketball, volleyball and tennis, and was a certified volleyball referee for many years. Al was a die hard Portland Blazer fan, a season ticket holder, and took lots of friends and family to watch games together. He also loved watching NFL football and yelling at the TV.
He had an affinity for music and a wide range of musical style: classic rock, jazz, popera, rhythm and blues, worship music, and country. He himself was an amazing singer and enjoyed concerts of all kinds.
Al was preceded in death by his parents Jesus and Grace Viado, his sister Dolores Viado Ragudo, and his brother Raymond Viado.
Survived by his wife Pamela Viado, his children Sarah Viado and Paul Viado, his stepchildren Brett Parry and Shanna Huante, his brothers James Viado and George Viado, and his beloved dogs Bella and Joey.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Happy Valley, Oregon.

Anastacio ‘Tony’ Gacutan Escalona
Anastacio ‘Tony’ Gacutan Escalona, 84, of Kapa’a, passed away on Oahu on March 13, 2025. He was born in Ilocos Sur, Philippines on Dec. 8, 1940, and retired as a butcher with Big Save Market in Kapa’a.
Preceded in death by his son Anthony Escalona, wife and mother of his children Virginia Escalona, siblings Theodorico, Carmen, Saturnina, Paulina, Venancia and Esperanza.
He is survived by his daughter Barbara (Roderick) Green and their children Andrea Green, Nialani Green, Austin Green, daughter-in-law Erma Escalona and her children Anthony Kalama Escalona, Ailana Sidney Escalona, wife Evangeline Escalona, brother Marcos Escalona, stepchildren Ruby Calapatia, Reinario (Frances) Calapatia and his children Kiani, Jayden, Keylan, great-grandchildren Xybren, Jaybri, Ryker, Mila, Reggie (Chanel) Calapatia and his children Trevor (Shaylyn), Katelin, Chanceson and his children Maia, Mace Calapatia, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at St. Catherine Church with viewing from 9:30 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Plebecita “Nanang” Jaquias, of Hanamaulu, passed away on Nov. 5, 2024, in Santa Rosa, California, at the age of 88. She was born in Tayum, Abra, Philippines, on April 26, 1936. She relocated to Hawaii in 1974, where she worked for Lihue Plantation and Sheraton Hotel.
She was predeceased by parents Eusebia Balauro and Ricardo Gandeza, husband Ruben Jaquias, Hipolito Aquias, daughter Gloria Tanner, grandson Michael Harper, daughters-in-law Editha Aquias, Marylyn Gerardo, brothers Johnny and Wally Gandeza.
She is survived by her daughters Emma Aquias Iloreta, Evelyn (Catalino) Aranda, sons Leonardo Aquias, Frederick Aquias, Jerry (Mary) Aquias, Renante (Charie) Aquias, 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, son-in-law Jimmy Iloreta, Ester Gandeza, brothers James, Joseph (Shelly), Jacob (Noreen) Gandeza, sisters Jessie (Norvin) Olivas, Florence Gandeza Tavares, Edna (Julio) Bolante, numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Visitation from 9 to 10 a.m., Mass from 10 to 11 a.m., and burial will take place at Kauai Memorial Gardens after the Mass.
