Local roundup: Two-out single in seventh lifts Neumann baseball to win vs. Benton
St. John Neumann baseball improved to 6-2 after defeating Benton in a close contest, 4-3, thanks to a superb pitching performance by Angelo Birch.
Birch threw a complete game, four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and the Golden Knights’ defense didn’t allow an extra-base hit.
Avery Taddeo had a game-winning single with two outs in the top of the seventh.
Birch went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a run scored. Maverick Dunkleburger went 2 for 4 with a double and RBI for the Golden Knights.
An 11-run fifth inning put the mercy-rule into effect as Williamsport defeated Selinsgrove on the road in a rout, 18-3, in five innings. The Millionaires led 5-2 after the first inning and never looked back.
Williamsport’s Gio White went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a team-high six RBIs and scored three runs. Jaxson March had a double with three RBIs.
The Millionaires also saw Camden March go 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Christian Franzen was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and four runs scored.
Blake Babb threw 6 2/3 marvelous innings and combined with Jace Gray on a two-hit shutout, helping Hughesville thump Bloomsburg, 12-0. Babb struck out six, pounded the strike zone and improved to 3-0, while Gray produced the game’s final out. Trent Wetzel ignited Hughesville (5-1) offensively, going 3 for 4 with two runs.
Dylan McConnell was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and Jed Abernatha and Connor Anstadt both had RBI hits. Brenden Fisher drew four walks.
Jimmy Mussina threw five shutout innings and allowed just two hits, while four different players produced two hits as Montoursville defeated Milton, 9-3 and improved to 4-0. The Warriors broke the game open, scoring eight runs in the sixth inning and building a 9-0 lead. Noah Kirby and Jonah Heddings both collected two hits, doubles and RBIs.
Brayden McCourt and Elijah Eck also delivered two hits with McCourt scoring a run and Eck driving in one. Royce Bowes had a hit and scored twice, while Mussina helped his cause with a hit and RBI.
• Jersey Shore defeated Montoursville, 4-1, in boys tennis. The Bulldogs swept the singles competition. Ryder Fink won at No. 1 singles against Teli Bobotas, 6-0, 6-1 while Saul Hensler earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.
Abram Paulhamus won a three-set contest at No. 3 against Gio Catino, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Danville defeated South Williamsport, 4-1, handing the Mounties their second loss of the season (6-2).
South’s lone win came at No. 3 singles where Carson Harris rallied from a first-set loss to beat Colin Sauers in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Muncy picked up a 4-1 win against North Penn-Liberty. The Indians swept the singles competition. Michael Howard won at No. 1 against Ray Nickerson, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2, Clynt Oden beat Ayden Deitrick, 6-0, 6-0 and at No. 3 , Alec Noviello secured a 6-0, 6-3 win over Silas Boiywo.
• Lock Haven lost a doubleheader against Slippery Rock, 8-4 and 8-2. Ethan Nagy, Robert Furino, Bryce Vincent and Jake Ambrosio drove in runs during game one.
• Sophomore Will Eberz finished tied for 23rd in a field of 71 golfers with a 7-over-par 79 to lead the Lycoming College golf team at the Penn State Altoona Invitational.
Mount Aloysius’ Josh Nicholl earned medalist honors with a 3-under-par 69 and Juniata and Mount Aloysius tied for the team title with 299.
Sophomore Mikey Fry posted an 84, sophomore Ross Eyer, a Muncy graduate, had an 89 and junior Dylan Seck had a 93 to round out the scoring four, as Lycoming posted a season-best 345. Sophomore Christian Eppley also added a 98.
• Matthew Muthler and Nick Bellomo competed in the decathlon at the SU Outdoor Multi hosted by Susquehanna University on Thursday and Friday afternoon.
The SU Outdoor Multi took place on the Amos Alonzo Stagg Field at Doug Arthur Stadium.
Matthew Muthler ended the two-day decathlon in second with an NCAA provisional mark of 6505 points. Muthler bested the field in the (Maroon) decathlon in five events.
On the first day, he won the shot put with a throw of 39-8 and the high jump with a height of 6-6 3/4.
On the second day, Muthler won the discus throw with a distance of 125-07, the javelin throw with a distance of 185-2 and the 1,500 with a time of 4:30.00.
Nick Bellomo also achieved an NCAA provisional mark with 6505 points, finishing fourth in the decathlon. Bellomo won the pole vault with a height of 14-05.25 and was in the top five in three other events.
