CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta - Switzerland has overtaken France’s long-held reputation as the most romantic country.
According to a study by European Waterways, Switzerland now ranks as the top romantic tourist destination in Europe.
The ranking is based on several factors, including the number of romantic restaurants, fine dining establishments, Michelin-starred venues, upscale wine bars (four stars or higher), available wine tours and tastings, and the total number of vineyards.
Quoted from Travel and Leisrue, France, often hailed as the fashion capital and known for its romantic cities like Paris, Bordeaux, and Carcassonne, has traditionally held this title.
However, in February, the cruise company named Switzerland as Europe’s most romantic holiday spot. Switzerland earned the highest score of 269 points, surpassing France, which received 250 points.
"France, while still a heavyweight in the romance category, has faced stiff competition from Switzerland’s unique offerings," said travel expert at European Waterways, Maryanne Sparkes.
"While destinations like Avignon, Bordeaux, and Carcassonne remain popular for their rich history and culinary excellence, Switzerland’s ability to provide both adventure and intimacy has propelled it to the top," she added.
Sparkes assessed that Swiss dedication emphasizes quality over quantity. This, combined with the stunning wine-producing areas such as La Vaux and Valais, giving it a stronger advantage and making it an ideal location for culinary enthusiasts, wine lovers, and devotees of romance.
Therefore, Switzerland achieved the highest ranking as a tourist destination to spend time with loved ones.
Additionally, the list states that Switzerland offers unparalleled luxury through top-class resorts such as Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski in St. Moritz, The Woodward in Geneva, and Mandarin Oriental Palace in Lucerne, which provide spa retreats, luxurious rooms, and an ideal stylish holiday atmosphere for couples to relax together.
This country offers stunning scenery throughout the year, from flower gardens around Lake Lucerne in spring to the snow-covered peak of Mount Verbier in winter.
Beyond the surreal landscapes and adventurous offerings, the subtle Switzerland hospitality reinforces its status as a romantic destination on the Blue Continent.
Hotels enhance the stay experience with world-class spa facilities, outdoor dining areas, and luxurious terraces overlooking the lake.
The Top Five and Other Categories
Based on the latest findings by European Waterways, the following are the top five countries that scored the highest in the competition for the title of the most romantic destination in Europe.
Switzerland ranked first with 269 points, followed by France with 250 points, Croatia with 244 points, Italy with 200 points, and the Netherlands with 167 points.
Greece and Italy also received recognition as romantic destinations. Santorini, for example, is known as one of the best places to watch the sunset, with its iconic white and blue houses perched on cliff edges.
Additionally, the Amalfi Coast and Positano in Italy are popular for their stunning coastal views, charming streets, and intimate atmosphere.
Beyond the top romantic destinations in Europe, the study also highlighted winners in specific categories. Carcassonne in France led in the number of vineyards and wineries, boasting 20 in total.
Santorini in Greece topped the list for the most tours and wine tastings available. Positano in Italy was recognized for its number of four-star wine bars, as well as for its romantic restaurants and fine dining experiences.
