Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 4 – Cambodian Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul sent a letter to Ambassador Jamieson Greer,
United States Trade Representative, requesting negotiation on tariff implementation on Cambodian exports.
"On behalf of the Ministry of Commerce of the Royal Government of Cambodia, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the US government for the continued support and excellent cooperation in all sectors for these 75 years of our diplomatic relations, which yields great benefits for the peoples of our countries," according to the letter seen by Fresh News on Friday (Apr. 4).
"Cambodia deeply values its longstanding relationship with the United States of America, which has been built on mutual respect, shared interests, and constructive engagement over many decades, of which most of Cambodia exports to the US are complimentary to the US goods and industries.
In the spirit of strengthening our bilateral trade relations, Cambodia is committed to promote US based product imports with an immediate reduction of 19 product categories from our maximum 35 per cent tariff bound rate to 5 per cent applied tariff rate as attached in Annex I.
In line with this, Cambodia requests to the US government to establish a negotiation mechanism and extend the deadline of the tariffs implementation to allow for further consultations with stakeholders and a thorough assessment of alternative approaches that uphold both US economic interests and Cambodia's sustainable development. Cambodia remains fully committed to engaging in constructive and productive dialogue with the US government to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes."
