One religious site in Surrey is so pretty, it is popular with walkers and film stars alike. Waverly Abbey in Farnham has featured in several blockbusters over the years, but most of the time is simply a scenic spot for a day out.
Waverley Abbey was the very first monastery founded in Britain by the reforming Cistercian religious order.
Today, only bits remain, with the lay brother’s quarters being the most impressive ruin, with columns and parts of the upper floor and south wall remaining.
There are also parts of the monks’ dormitory, chapter house, and other parts of the church.
The ruins are within a loop of the River Wey, and therefore are a peaceful and beautiful stopping point.
One recent Tripadvisor reviewer wrote: “First visit, beautiful grounds to wander round, Abbey ruins are amazing, lots of hidden things to find, loved the message tree for those that have gone.
"Delightful cafe, friendly helpful staff, house is stunning, toilet facilities extremely clean, provide lots of extras. Would definitely recommend, we will be returning.”
Some things that do keep returning are film crews, and the site has been a location for movies of all genres. In classic cop comedy Hot Fuzz the Abbey can be seen in the final chase scene and as well a scene in the Tom Cruise blockbuster The Mummy.
It is also listed as a backdrop for the films Elizabeth and Disney's Into the Woods.

The site is managed by English Heritage and free to visit. There is a small car park which the ruins are around a five-minute walk.
Walkers may also be interested to find a well reviewed spot to eat named The Cafe @ Waverley Abbey, where you can find specialty coffee, cakes and hearty lunches.
Dogs are welcome, if on a lead, but you should know that there is also evidence of adders at the site. Although the snakes are shy, and tend to hide rather than confront humans, they are venomous.
Bites are very rare but it is important to take care where you walk and keep children and pets close.
The Abbey is open any reasonable time during daylight hours and can be found on Waverley Lane, (GU9 8EP). This is only a short drive from Farnham Central and easily accessible from the A3 and M3. You can find more details here.
