James Alexander Spicer Sr., pastor of Freedom Baptist Church in Selma for nearly three decades, died March 2. He was 87.
Spicer retired from Freedom in 2023, where he was one of the seven founding members. He was the first African American pastor and moderator in the Selma/West Central Baptist Association.
John F. Meadows — who retired in April from the pastorate of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Salem — died Sept.
James “Bud” Jacks — pastor of Plainview Baptist Church, Talladega — died Aug. 7. He was 68. A native of
Don Smith, former pastor of several churches in west Alabama, died Aug. 21. He was 85. A Birmingham native, Smith
James McLain — former pastor of churches in Clarke and Washington Baptist associations — died July 28. He was 77.
