As the Muslim community celebrates Eid today, the Toorak Jame Mosque generously distributed 1,000 cups of sweets to people this morning.

People travelling in cars, and buses, and even those walking along Toorak Road were warmly greeted by members of the mosque with hot cups of “sevai”, spreading joy and festive cheer to mark the Eid festival.

“Sevai” is the traditional sweet dish prepared during Eid.

Mufti Mohammed Zaeem Zarib says every other religion has a day to celebrate, such as Diwali for Hindus and Easter for Christians, and this day allows the Muslim community to enjoy time with friends, family, and neighbours around the country.

He says they should look after the poor and needy, and it is necessary for those coming for the Eid prayers to make a donation called Zakat-al-Fitr, which is $8 per person in Fiji, to be given to the poor and needy.

Amin Khan, Head of the Department for Islamiyat at Suva Muslim College, says Eid is a time for celebration, but we should also take this opportunity to teach the younger generation.

He says nowadays, children are getting involved in drugs and other harmful substances, and they should be taught about the dangers in society.
