BRATTLEBORO — Local Muslims gathered to pray at the Centre Congressional Church on Sunday and celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, considered one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims. In Ramadan, Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Qur’an and fast from food and drink during the sunlit hours as a means of drawing closer to God and cultivating self-control, gratitude, and compassion for those less fortunate.
In a building full of activity on a Sunday morning, Centre Church has become a welcoming place for people from different faiths, a special place where people can pray during the high holidays for their respective faiths.
“It's quite remarkable," said Amer Latif, a leader of the Muslim prayer group who is originally from Pakistan. "I have been here for, you know, since 1995," he said. "I live in Putney, and to have these new members of the community here is quite remarkable."

Latif said there are Muslims from several different countries such as Mali, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Yemen coming together to join in prayer. He said this isn’t a common occurrence in various parts of the Muslim world, but to see them come together in Brattleboro is significant to him.
Latif explained that the word Eid means festival. He said this marks the first of the two festivals in the Muslim faith.
“There's two Eids in the Islamic tradition, and one of them marks the end of the month of fasting, Ramadan, which is a lunar month,” said Latif. “The other one happens at the end of the pilgrimage in Hajj. They come pretty close to each other. So, in another three months, we will have another Eid, which will mark the pilgrimage to Mecca.”
