Eid al-Fitr, or the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is an Islamic holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is considered a "spiritual retreat" for Muslims, where it is believed that blessings from Allah are multiplied. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, pray and go to mosque multiple times a day and donate to charity.

Eid al-Fitr celebrates the completion of this holy month and is marked by community gatherings and festive meals.

Here's everything you need to know about the holiday and where to celebrate in Reno.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2025?

Eid al-Fitr starts on the evening of Saturday, March 29, 2025, and ends on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

What is Eid al-Fitr? Is Eid al-Fitr the same thing as Ramadan?

Eid al-Fitr is the festival marking the end of Ramadan. This year, the Northern Nevada Muslim Community will celebrate with multiple food trucks serving halal (permissible under Islamic law) American, Mexican and Pakistani dishes, along with coffee and doughnuts.

Sherif Elfass, a former board member and current member of the Northern Nevada Muslim Community, said Reno's Muslim community has celebrated in the past with big barbecues at parks with bouncy houses and face painting. He also said neighboring California Muslim communities sometimes rent out theme parks for Eid al-Fitr, which the parks sometimes call "Muslim Family Day."

Where can I celebrate Eid al-Fitr this year?

The Northern Nevada Muslim Community's Eid al-Fitr celebration will be held Sunday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1855 Oddie Blvd. The event will include food trucks and family activities.

If I am not Muslim, can I join my Muslim friends to Eid al-Fitr events?

Yes. Elfass said non-Muslims can join in the celebrations.

"This is a good time to share things," Elfass said. "We try to do as many good things that we can and try to connect with other people."

How do you wish someone a Happy Eid al-Fitr?

“Eid Mubarak,” meaning “blessed festival” in Arabic, is a common greeting during Eid al-Fitr.

What is the difference between Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of the Breaking of the Fast," marks the end of Ramadan. Eid al-Adha is the second Eid in the Islamic calendar and falls on the 10th day in the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah. This year, Eid al-Adha predicted to begin the evening of June 6 and end on the night of June 7.

Eid al-Adha, which translates to the "Festival of Sacrifice," commemorates the story of Ibrahim (or Abraham in the Christian and Jewish faiths), who was willing to sacrifice his son to Allah as a test of faith. According to Islamic tradition, Allah intervened and provided an animal to sacrifice instead.

Is Eid al-Fitr a state holiday? What is Assembly Bill 82?

Assembly Bill 82 was introduced to the Legislature during the current session by Assemblymember Reuben D'Silva, a Democrat from Las Vegas. AB82 would require the Nevada governor to annually proclaim certain days that honor various holidays in the Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh faiths.

If passed, the bill would officially recognize holidays including Eid al-Fitr Day, Diwali Day, Vaisakhi Day and Vesak Day.

AB82 would not create official days off but would recognize holidays important to various communities.
