The public comment portion of the C-I school board meeting was re-scheduled for later at a larger venue after the Ironton city hall was overwhelmed with people, leaving many outside last night. Main purpose of the meeting was to discuss strategy with their attorney in answering a lawsuit by the teachers' union.
30 years ago (1995)
The name will change but the community-based philosophy will stay the same, said Andy Anderson, president of International Bancorporation, a Minnesota company. They are buying American National Bank in south Brainerd and its two branches, according to Tom Johnson, American's president.
40 years ago (1985)
Jenny Gross, Brainerd, who was the winner of the Brainerd school district spelling bee earlier, went on to win the North Central Regional Spelling Bee in Bemidji. The Washington School 7th grader now moves on to the state spelling contest to be held in late April.
60 years ago (1965)
The school board met in special session last night to exercise options on about $100,000 worth of property that will become the site of the new technical vocational school. The land is largely west of 5th Street and South of Quince Street. There are a few properties that will require condemnation proceedings.
80 years ago (1945)
A battlefield promotion to the rank of 1st Lieutenant was given to James Quinlan, 29, of Brainerd, serving with the 112th Infantry deep in Germany. He has seen almost continual action since emerging from Normandy and pursuing the Germans. He was awarded the Purple Heart in ferocious fighting in the battle of Hurtgen Forest.
100 years ago (1925)
A young lady from the south side was accosted and chased across the railroad tracks just before noon on Sunday. She was enroute to the Bethlehem Evangelical Church when the man jumped out from behind a box. She screamed and ran. Men from the church went back with her to search but couldn't find the attacker.

37/46: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street).
