Mosaic Vocal Ensemble, a new chamber choir of experienced choral singers, will present its debut concert, “Taking Flight,” March 29 at 7:30 p.m. and March 30 at 4 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 625 15th St. in Eureka. Tickets are $20 at the door.

The ensemble, founded and conducted by Rachel Samet, Cal Poly Humboldt’s director of choirs, is a DreamMaker program of the Ink People Center for the Arts.

This inaugural concert features a selection of choral works spanning the Renaissance to contemporary compositions, including Gregorio Allegri’s “Miserere” and Charles Stanford’s “The Blue Bird,” alongside pieces by Leonard Bernstein, Cecilia MacDowall and Eric Whitacre.

“This group is something I’ve dreamed of creating for a long time, and I am so grateful to bring together such talented singers to share this incredible music with our community,” Samet said.

The concert’s title, “Taking Flight,” reflects both the ensemble’s launch and the themes woven throughout the program. Works like Peter Phillips’ “Ascendit Deus” and Cecilia MacDowall’s “Regina Caeli” contain texts that “literally reach for the skies,” Samet says, while Sarah Quartel’s “The Birds’ Lullaby” and Stephen Chatman’s “Wasps” take a more natural approach to flight, inspired by the rhythms of the natural world.
