A fire last week claimed property at the Salvation Army’s storage area at 323 Columbus Dr., behind the Salvation Army Family Store.
Salvation Army Lieutenant Bailey Sawka said the insurance adjuster was visiting this week to determine the loss, and hopefully the cause, of the fire. Sawka said the Burlington Fire Department responded to the blaze but was unable to determine the cause.
The storage garage contained both donated and purchased items which the Salvation Army hands out to those in need. Sawka said the purchased items are covered by insurance, but donations are not, so sifting through what is left to determine value could be a problem.
A semi-trailer has been donated to use for collecting items to replace those lost. Sawka said the Burlington community has been incredible and helpful as the Salvation Army tries to recoup what was lost and build back its supplies.
The United Way of Southeast Iowa has organized a donation drive for the Salvation Army. According to Sawka, donations of cash are being accepted, and also small household appliances, personal hygiene and personal care items, clothing, household goods and small furniture items.
Donations can be brought to the United Way office, 2nd floor of the F&M Bank building at the corner of Jefferson and Third Streets in downtown Burlington, Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and to the Salvation Army Family Store, 323 Columbus Dr., Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
