Calera Baptist Church moving forward after severe storms damaged property
CALERA, Ala. (WBRC) - After a tornado ripped through Calera on Saturday night, the community has stepped up to help one of its cornerstone institutions, Calera Baptist Church, begin the long road to recovery.
The storm tore off parts of the church’s sanctuary roof and caused heavy damage to the education building.
But by the next morning, cleanup efforts were already in motion, with hundreds of volunteers showing up to clear debris and remove fallen trees.
“They brought equipment, chainsaws, we had tractors, tracks—anything that was needed to clean up, both outside and inside,” said Pastor Jason Jarvis.
Beyond physical labor, the church has also received an outpouring of support, including an alternative worship space.
Starting this Sunday, services will be held at Calera High School, with a family worship time the first week and childcare resuming the following week.
Sunday School for all ages will restart soon after, with one united service at 10:45 a.m.
“We’ll be worshiping together for a while, and honestly, I’m looking forward to the unity. It’s bringing our church family even closer,” Jarvis said.
With Easter approaching, Jarvis emphasized that the support they’ve received is a reflection of what Calera Baptist has invested in the community over the years.
“And now, we’re being blessed. It’s amazing to see how people are stepping up to help the church in our time of need,” he said.
While there’s no clear timeline for when repairs will be complete, church leaders expect it could take several months.
In the meantime, services will continue at Calera High School, and parts of the church that remain intact will still be used.
