The Salvation Army has been a beacon of hope for those in need for over a century, focusing on providing pathways to housing for those experiencing homelessness. The organization emphasizes that the journey to get back on your feet often comes with obstacles.

"It is not as black and white or as easy as some think," said Toni-Lynn Mark, a spokeswoman for the Salvation Army. "They may not have a cell phone or Wi-Fi to apply for a job, they may not have an address to write on a job application. They may not have a computer to write a resume or printer to print one out.”

The Salvation Army stressed the importance of understanding the complexities of serving the homeless. While donating food is a common form of assistance, knowing what to donate is crucial. Non-perishable items like canned goods are preferred, as fresh food cannot be stored properly by those without stable housing.

Beyond providing food, the Salvation Army works closely with individuals to help them change their lifestyle. David Childs, a major with the Salvation Army, shared a success story:

A mom who just had two young boys who came to us looking for help, we were able to get her into her first house -- help them with a car -- all the bills and everything that goes with that.

Childs continued, "And now you have a young family with a mom with two kids, living in their own home, she has a great job and able to take care of herself now."

The Salvation Army's individualized approach aims to create customized plans to help people overcome their personal obstacles, demonstrating the organization's commitment to transforming lives in Harrisburg.
