The Salvation Army in Beaumont is expanding its services and increasing shelter capacity as homelessness in Southeast Texas has more than doubled over the past two years. Lieutenant James Guzman of the Salvation Army highlighted the precarious situation many face, saying, "People in this community are really just one paycheck away from being homeless. Often times they have to make a decision, do I pay my rent or do I put food on the table."

One resident, Acacia Bowman, shared her struggle after losing her father and subsequently her apartment due to overwhelming medical bills. "I am a single parent of a little boy with medical needs as well, so I've been trying to get as much assistance as I can," said Bowman, who has been homeless on and off for three years with her 6-year-old son, Frank.

Bowman is utilizing various programs offered by the Salvation Army and other organizations to change her situation. "They have the food pantry and the clothing pantry down there at Some Other Place. I utilize services at Lamar University. I was just at the workforce center today looking for a job," she said.

The Salvation Army provides programs through partnerships with other organizations offering mental health services, food, clothing, and case workers to assist individuals in identifying their needs. Lieutenant Guzman explained, "If their goal is to get a job, but they have a hard time getting a job because they need an ID or a birth certificate, we know who we can refer them to to get those things."

Bowman expressed her gratitude for the support, saying, "If it wasn't for them being here, I don't know where me or my son would be. Probably staying in my storage unit or on the street."

The Salvation Army is urging the community to get involved and learn how they can help. In collaboration with Sinclair, the organization is part of the "Sinclair Cares: From Homeless to Hope" initiative, aimed at raising awareness about homelessness and highlighting services that provide hope and stability.
