The Chief Imam of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Alhaji Lawal  Olaoye, has urged Muslims to remain steadfast in faith, emphasising that trials are part of life’s divine test for believers.

Speaking on Sunday at the fourth annual Ramadan lecture of the Ile Alfa Sons and Daughters of Aliwo Royal Family, Agodi in Ibadan, the cleric addressed the theme: “Why Do God-Fearing People Suffer While Evil-Doers Enjoy?”

He explained that, in Islam, trials and tribulations serve as opportunities for spiritual growth and a means to attain closeness to Allah.

According to him, the Quran repeatedly underscores the virtues of patience and perseverance, assuring divine rewards for those who remain steadfast during difficult times.

“Challenges are not signs of abandonment by Allah but a test of faith. The righteous endure trials because Allah wants to elevate their status and purify them,” Olaoye stated.

The cleric further categorised people into four groups, noting that each faces different experiences in life.

He explained that in Islam, trials and tribulations are seen as opportunities for spiritual growth and closeness to Allah.

He added that the Quran emphasises the importance of patience and perseverance during difficult times, promising rewards for those who remain steadfast in their faith.

The cleric explained, “Some will have the enjoyment of life while losing in the hereafter; some will be denied the enjoyment of this life and lose in the hereafter; some will enjoy the benefits of this life and have a good hereafter; while some will lose this life and also lose in the hereafter.

“The Paradise is surrounded by hardships and the Hell-Fire is surrounded by temptations.

“This Hadith highlights the idea that the life of a believer is filled with challenges and hardships, which serve as a test of their faith and patience. On the other hand, non-believers may seem to be living a life of ease and luxury, but this is only a temporary illusion.”

Quoting from the holly Quran, the cleric further said, “In another Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have said that the most affluent people in this world will be dipped in the Fire (of Hell), while the most destitute people in this world, who are believers, will be dipped in Paradise.

“Those Hadiths emphasized the importance of perseverance and faith in the face of adversity, and served as a reminder that the true rewards and punishments lie in the Hereafter, not in this temporary life.”

“By preparing for trial periods, Muslims can navigate life’s challenges with confidence and faith, ultimately strengthening their relationship with Allah.”

In his remarks, the first Baàmẹ̀kọ́ of Ibadanland, Chief Saheed Oladele, commended the Sons and Daughters of Ile-Alfa Royal Family for organising the annual Ramadan Lecture.

The Chairman, Organizing Committee, Dr. Rasheed Fasasi, in his welcome address, hinted that the lecture was organized purposely to seek forgiveness for the deceased sons and daughters of Ile Alfa and to attract Allah’s mercy for those that are alive.

He explained that the programme, fully funded by members of the family, both in Nigeria and the diaspora, will serve as a flowing charity for their deceased parents and members.

The Family Head, Alagba Dauda Adeyemo, appreciated everyone present at the event and those who contributed to the success of the annual Ramadan lecture.
