DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) — The Northland Foundation has provided thousands of dollars to a dozen area nonprofits.

The Northland Foundation awarded $585,000 through its Quarterly Grant program.

It will help to address care services and operating expenses within child care centers, homeless shelters and veterans groups.

Recipients include Life House, True North Goodwill and Valley Youth Centers in Duluth.

The Violence Prevention Center in Grand Marais was also supported, along with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Grand Rapids.

Grants totaling $95,000 were made to four child care businesses located in the communities of Hoyt Lakes, Duluth and Tamarack.

The foundation’s president, Tony Sertich, said that without childcare, our economy doesn’t work.

“While we are not going to completely solve our region’s childcare shortfall with this funding, we must continue to chip away at it,” Sertich said. “We are grateful that people throughout the state are paying attention to childcare and that legislators are prioritizing this as an issue.”
