'Prayers were answered': Family pulls dogs out from under tornado wreckage
AND NOW TO A STORY. YOU WILL ONLY SEE ON KCCI. A WESTERN IOWA FAMILY IS COUNTING THEIR BLESSINGS AFTER ALL, MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILY WERE ACCOUNTED FOR AFTER FRIDAY’S STORM. KCCI OPHELIA JACOBSON WENT TO DEFIANCE TO SPEAK WITH THE DOG BREEDERS, WHO SAY IT’S A MIRACLE THEIR FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS GOT OUT ALIVE OF CLEANING UP AFTER FRIDAY’S STORM IS A FAMILY AFFAIR. AT THE SABIN’S. LUCKILY, THEY DON’T HAVE TO DO IT ALONE. THIS COMMUNITY WE HAVE IS UNBELIEVABLE. JUST UNBELIEVABLE, BRYCE SHABAN SAYS. NEIGHBORS, FRIENDS, FAMILIES AND EVEN STRANGERS SHOWED UP AT THEIR HOME TO HELP A LOT OF WATER DAMAGE BECAUSE THE ROOF GOT BLOWN OFF, SHINGLES GOT BLOWN OFF. THE PORCH WE SHOULD BE SITTING UNDER IS GONE. THIS SHED WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY THE STORM, BUT IT WAS WHAT WAS STAYING INSIDE OF THESE KENNELS THAT WORRIED THEM THE MOST. IT SCARED, SCARED ME. IT SCARED ME A LOT BECAUSE THESE GUYS MEAN SO MUCH TO US. KARI AND BRYCE HAVE BEEN BREEDING HUNGARIAN VIZSLAS FOR DECADES. FIVE OF THEIR DOGS WERE IN THIS SHED WHEN THE STORM CAME THROUGH. THIS WALL ALL JUST WENT FLOP RIGHT ON TOP OF MY KENNELS AND, UH, PINNED TWO OF THE DOGS. THE TWO DOGS, JUNI AND BOBBY, WERE NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. KARI ASSUMED THE WORST. THERE WAS A LOT OF TEARS. YEAH, IT STILL IS HARD TO TALK ABOUT BECAUSE IT’S PRETTY FRESH. BUT THE CHAPIN SAY WHAT HAPPENED NEXT IS NOTHING SHORT OF A MIRACLE. THEY FOUND JUNE 1ST AND WE GOT SORES ALL DOWN IN THERE AND CUT THE KENNEL AND GOT HER OUT. AND THEN BOBBY, THEY GOT SOME, UH, A JACK OUT AND LIFTED THE BUILDING UP JUST A LITTLE BIT OFF OF HER. THE DOGS HAVE A COUPLE OF STITCHES AND BRUISES FROM THE CLOSE CALL, BUT THAT ISN’T STOPPING THEM FROM RUNNING AROUND THE YARD AGAIN. THE FAMILY HAS ALSO RECEIVED DONATIONS OF DOG FOOD AND TREATS TO HELP WITH RECOVERY. I WANT TO I WANT TO REBUILD IMMEDIATELY AND GET MY DOGS BACK IN THERE. THE FAMILY IS MAKING DO WITH WHAT THEY STILL HAVE AND COUNTING THEIR BLESSINGS THAT EVERYBODY SEE. THERE ARE KIDS MADE IT OUT ALIVE. IT WOULD HAVE BROKE OUR HEARTS PRETTY SEVERELY. PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED THAT NIGHT IN DEFIANCE. OFELIA JACOBSO

The shed was completely destroyed. One wall fell on top of the kennels and pinned two of the dogs inside.

"It scared me," Carrie Schaben said. "It scared me a lot because these guys mean so much to us."

Junie and Bobby were nowhere to be found. Carrie assumed the worst. That is — until her husband and some family members came to the rescue. They found Junie first.

"We got a Sawzall down in there and cut the kennel and got her out," Bryce Schaben said.

Then, they turned their attention to Bobby. Bryce said they had to use a jack to lift up the debris to get the second dog out.

The dogs have a couple of stitches and bruises from the close call. They were running around the yard Monday.

As for the family's property, Bryce said they have lots of water damage, roof damage, and their porch is gone. But he said they've had lots of help from family, friends and even strangers in the days following the storm.

"This community we have is just unbelievable," Bryce said.

Bryce and Carrie are just thankful that everybody made it out alive.

"Prayers were answered that night," Carrie said.

The family said they've also received donations of dog food and treats from friends. They hope to rebuild the shed that the dogs once lived in as soon as possible.
