ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) - Albany State’s track and field team headed up to Atlanta for the SIAC championships on Wednesday morning. Before the team hit the roach Coach Robert Skinner gave the team a pep talk before he opened up in prayer and said the team had the opportunity to do something no other ASU team has been able to do this season, bring home a championship. Let’s just just say the Lady Rams understood the assignment.

Coming into Saturday, the final day of the meet Albany State’s women’s team stood at the top of the leaderboard, 12 points ahead of Clark Atlanta.

Albany State was able to hold on to that lead with top finishes in the 4x100m, 4x400m, 1500m, 800m, 400mh and many other events.

The lady rams put an end to Benedict’s streak of five consecutive SIAC titles. This marks the first championship for the Lady Rams since 2016, and head coach Kenneth Taylor’s 26th title. For Coach Taylor, the youth of this team is what makes this one so special.

“We have a lot of young folks on this team. This is a very youth oriented team. Most of the members of these team are freshman. We have about 80% walk-ons in this program on the women’s side so we’re young and so we’re young and we’re hungry so expect to see us back here in the future,” said Coach Taylor.

On the men’s side Albany State took home gold in the 4x100, 110mh, 400mh, 100m and 200m. All eyes were on the 4x1 team who clocked the fastest time in all of Divison II in the prelims on Friday.

The Golden Rams finished third in the conference behind Benedict and Morehouse.
