Women’s Craft Show To Help Revive Handcraft Talents

“Every woman is gifted. Some have gone into entrepreneurship and are making a living out of it and at the same time while they are doing this we want to remind them that as a dorcas, you have a responsibility to your community,” Ms Kaisuva said.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church West women’s craft show has revived the special and traditional handcraft items made by women. The show was organised by the Dorcas Society.

More than 400 women from 14 different districts in the Western Division showcased their various handmade items during the one- day showcase at Lautoka’s Shirley Park yesterday.

The society is a social arm of the church that looks after the needs of the community, looks into the livelihood of women and builds capacity. Fiji Wide Women, Children and Family Ministry director, Alice Kaisuva, said the spiritual development of the women in local churches helped empower them to go out and become witnesses in communities.

The first craft show was completed in the Central Division last week. Women in the Northern Division will have their turn next week.

Ms Kaisuva said the atmosphere was amazing, witnessing the hidden gifts and talents women had.

“Every woman is gifted. Some have gone into entrepreneurship and are making a living out of it and at the same time while they are doing this we want to remind them that as a dorcas, you have a responsibility to your community,” Ms Kaisuva said.

She said 10 per cent of the women’s earnings would go towards the organisation and 80 per cent belonged to the women.

Ms Kaisuva plans to run the craft show every year. The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation divisional women interest officer western, Makereta Naisau, said the craft show created a platform and opportunity for the women to learn and relearn from one another in terms of the different products, marketing skills and quality of products they had.

“The ministry would like to see more women artisans from the Western Division to qualify for the upcoming Divisional Show and National Women’s Expo,” Ms Naisau said.

Participant Rosi Lele was grateful to the church for allowing the women to expose their God-gifted talents.

“This is a wonderful time for us to be here and showcase what we have made,” she said.
