James ‘Carlos’ Bishop

Oct. 30, 1923-May 22, 2022

James “Carlos” Bishop was born in Hinckley, Utah, on Oct. 30, 1923, to Clark H. and LaVeda Hutchings Bishop and died Sunday, May 22, 2022, in Hurricane, Utah. He was the second of six children with a sister, LaFaun and brothers David, Jerold, Milan and  Marvin. He spent his early years in Sutherland, Utah, later moving to Cropper Lane in Oasis. Upon graduation from Hinckley High School in 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the European Campaign of World War II. He was always known as Carlos until he entered the military and gradually, he became used to his first name Jim. He sent most of his money home to his family and wrote often to his parents, brothers Jerold and David who were serving in the South Pacific and his girlfriend Raina. When the war ended, he was honorably discharged on New Year’s Day of 1946.

Upon returning home, he married his high school sweetheart, Raina Langston, on Feb. 14, 1946, in the Manti Temple. They were blessed with seven children: James (Jennifer), Bruce (Sherry), Sonya (Larry) Burg, Doreen (Steve) Rollo, Chris (Terrie), Phil (Lisa, deceased), Scott (Kayrene), 24 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved the Lord, his family, the farm and a tractor. He bore his testimony often and on at least one occasion it was a vocal solo from the pulpit. He was a dedicated home teacher and was a man of gratitude and always said a “thank you” for any kindness shown to him. He and Raina served as missionaries in the Bishop’s Storehouse as well as ordinance workers in the temple in St. George and proselyting missionaries in Morristown, New Jersey, in 1994-95. He enjoyed gardening and he could fix anything. He loved time with extended family at reunions and was always up for a challenging game of horseshoes, table tennis or checkers. He spent most of his working years as a heavy equipment operator for Utah International Iron Mines in Cedar City and for Anaconda in Tonopah, Nevada.

Following Raina’s death, he married Josephine Jordan on July 1, 2006, and added a few more to the family: George (Arlene) Green and Randy Green. He and Jo spent 15 wonderful years together.

In May 2015, he had the opportunity of visiting historical sites and war memorials in the Washington D.C. area with his younger brother David escorted by their sons, Jim, and Dean as part of Honor Flight.

In September 2021, he entered an assisted living facility in Hurricane. He enjoyed his time there and spoke often of the staff and their kindness. On the rare occasion, when he couldn’t eat what they were serving for supper, all he had to do was ask and they would bring him one of his favorites, a PB&J sandwich. We are very grateful for the attentive care he received during his stay there.

He will be missed by many … until we meet again.
