The deputy ministry of tourism organised a teleconference for the development and promotion of religious tourism in Cyprus, the Church said on Thursday.

Chaired by the deputy minister Savvas Perdios, the teleconference discussed visits to holy places and church museums and ways to resolve various problems. Suggestions were also submitted on ways to improve the situation and the tourist product on offer.

Officials from the ministry, the antiquities department, and the tourism development and promotion companies participated, as well as the president of the Cyprus Tourist Guides Association.

Also participating was the office for pilgrimage tours of the Church of Cyprus and a representative of the Bishopric of Kition.

Religious tourism is one type of the sector that is affected less by the pandemic and other unprecedent situations compared with other types, the Church said.

A new meeting was scheduled to promote the necessary procedures for the development of religious tourism.
