The new national closure over the next two weeks will lead to the Church of Norway canceling services and banning funerals with more than 50 participants.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) presented a package of new, strict measures to reduce infection in Norway.
The measures will affect “all planned activities in the Church,” Church Council director Ingrid Vad Nilsen said.
“Funerals with a maximum of 50 participants can still be held. This also applies to small individual gatherings or ceremonies with up to ten participants when it is considered necessary locally.
“In addition, we recommend that planned services and activities be carried out digitally or canceled in the next two weeks,” she said in a press release.
Exceptions can be made for smaller gatherings or ceremonies with up to ten participants, such as baptisms, weddings, and recordings of digital worship.
The new rules for the Church apply from January 4.
