Downtown Mission Church to provide free movie event at Cosmo Theatre

Downtown Mission Church is located next to the Cosmo Theatre. When the theatre was unable to show films in March the church began seeking an opportunity to support the local business and offer a night of entertainment for free to the community. That opportunity has come, now that the Cosmo has begun renting out the theater for private showings.
On Sunday, August 16 two movies will be offered free of charge to the public. Both films are family friendly and rated PG. Individuals are encouraged to further support the theatre by purchasing concessions. Showtimes will be 3:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. but are limited-due to COVID restrictions-to the first 25 individuals per show that register in advance online. Find more information through the event listing and register through Eventbrite at facebook.com/DMCMerrill or you can access the Eventbrite site directly using http://bit.ly/freemovienarnia and http://bit.ly/freemoviewoodlawn.
“Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” is C.S. Lewis’ classic tale of four children that travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia, learning their destiny through the guidance of Aslan the lion to free the land from the evil White Witch. This film will show at 3:15 p.m. on August 16th.
“Woodlawn” is the inspirational true story of the Woodlawn High School football team in deeply racially divided Birmingham, Alabama in 1973. The film stars Sean Astin (Rudy, Lord of the Rings), Jon Voight (Varsity Blues) and Caleb Castille as Tony Nathan, a gifted young athlete that must learn to embrace his talent and his faith as he battles racial tensions on and off the field. One film critic writes “The movie isn’t so much about the on-field success that followed the team’s transformation as it is the positive impact that their unity had on the community that was in desperate need of something – anything – to not simply ease tensions but begin the process of healing from, and erasing, a history of violence, mistrust, fear, and hatred.”
Woodlawn will show at 7 p.m. on August 16.
Downtown Mission Church is a gospel-centered, multi-site church with locations in Merrill, Stevens Point, and Wausau, Wisconsin. We love God, love people, and love our cities. We believe God has directed us to start churches in each of these cities to minister uniquely to the needs of the people who live in them. Believers, seekers, and skeptics are all welcome in our buildings. Come as you are! Hear the message of Jesus who desires to meet you where you are and bring you to himself! Whether you’ve known Jesus for decades and are looking for a church in which to grow, or you are still trying to figure out what to believe about God, we count it a privilege to be a part of what God is doing in central Wisconsin.
