Maha Shivratri is an annual Hindu festival that marks the day of the consummation of the marriage between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Meaning ‘the Great night of Shiva’, it falls in the month of Phalgun or February-March. Lord Shiva is known to the founder of yoga and meditation. The day also marks a remembrance of ‘overcoming darkness and ignorance’ in the world. Devotees fast on this day and offer milk, honey and water to the Shivlings. This day is also used by devotees to absolve themselves of sins and attain moksha.
