The public has been urged to avoid the scene of a Birmingham house fire.

Around 20 firefighters rushed to Woodstock Road in Handsworth early on Wednesday after a severe blaze erupted in the loft.

The scene was sealed off by police and firefighters while they make the scene safe.

Locals have been urged to avoid the area.

Fortunately, the family had evacuated the house before fire services arrived.

It is not believed anyone was injured.

West Midlands Police were at the scene to help manage the road closure.



Force Response tweeted an image of the closed-off road.

They wrote: "A unit Newtown are assisting the fire service with a large house fire on Woodstock Road, Handsworth.

"Embers of public advised to avoid area. No casualties reported at this stage."

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We were called to Woodstock Road at 5.25am. We sent four pumps, one crew from Handsworth, one from Ladywood and two from Aston.

"Incident was severe fire in the loft space. Four breathing apparatus and two hose reels in use.

"We requested the electricity board this could be because the electricity was damaged in the fire.

"Fire crews still in attendance and the road may still be closed as it is a small road and fire engines block off the road.

"There were no persons inside and fire crews checked either side of the house to ensure it had not spread."
